New Forest Karate Club is a family club and welcomes beginners and experienced students of all abilities.
Nigel has been a student of Shotokan Karate for over 30 years and studied with a number of Japanese and European Sensei (Instructor). He visited Japan and Okinawa in 2000 and briefly trained at the Japanese Karate Association HQ in Tokyo. He holds the grade of Yon Dan (4th Dan) and has a rank of Karate registered in the UK and Japan. Nigel is an NHS Technical Instructor (Sports & Fitness) and registered with the Royal Association of Occupational Therapists. His ability to deliver traditional Shotokan Karate lessons is underpinned with a comprehensive understanding of physiology & anatomy, which was gained during his previous 21 years served with the NHS. His life experience and understanding of human development is enhanced with a background of teaching physical exercise to those with limited abilities. He is a registered Advanced Boxercise Instructor, a Fitness Coach with the NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) www.nasm.org/ and registered with REP's www.exerciseregister.org/ Nigel has taught Shotokan Karate to students of various levels and successfully developed and guided several members of his Karate Club to Dan grade (black belt) level. He has coordinated and organised a number of Karate fund raising events (please see news & events page) and was presented with a special award from the Japanese Karate Association in 2015. Sheryl took up Karate at the age of 19 and has since trained with various senior Karate instructors, both European and Japanese. Sheryl is the Club Welfare Officer and Assistant Instructor at the New Forest Karate Club. Sheryl studied foreign languages at University before serving as a Commissioned Officer with the Royal Navy. Sheryl achieved a Diploma in Sports Injuries and qualifications in Sports First Aid, Fitness Instruction and Sports Massage, working as an independent professional for various prestigious sporting organisations. As a Cardiac Rehabilitation Instructor, she was responsible for providing specific treatment to patients who had suffered from debilitating cardiac events by providing individually tailored fitness programmes.
Nigel and Sheryl are a dedicated team and committed Karate Instructors, focused on supporting their students' development and improving their understanding and technique. They believe Karate is all inclusive, improves fitness, confidence and compliments existing therapies, reduces stress, anxiety and depression.
